Former coach sentenced in sexual battery case

Former Marion County coach and teacher Stephen Harris has been sentenced on two counts of sexual battery involving a female student.
Circuit Judge Prentiss Harrell sentenced Harris Thursday to 20 years on each count.

Harrell suspended all but three years and six months of each of the sentences, which will run consecutively.

Additionally, the judge ordered Harris to pay $3,550 in restitution.

When he leaves prison he must register as a sex offender and will not be allowed to teach again.

Harris was a teacher and baseball coach at West Marion for the 2006-07 school term.

He was arrested in October 2006 on charges involving a female student at West Marion High. He pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual battery in July.

Harris also faces two counts of statutory rape and three counts of sexual battery for incidents in Newton County where he was also a coach and teacher until May 2006.
