State championship for Oak Grove High School

Oak Grove wins its ninth state championship.

The high school is now the 5A state champion after beating Madison Central 5-4 in game three of the class 5A state championship series.  Tyler Kittrell earned the win for the Warriors, celebrating their ninth state championship for the school and legendary coach Harry Breland.

Breland, who finishes his 37th year as Oak Grove head coach, called on first game starter Tyler Vanderheiden to close the game with Madison Central, trailing by a run and a baserunner at second with one out.  Vanderheiden responded with a strikeout and catching a weak infield popout to earn the save.

Oddly enough, it was Madison Central which beat Oak Grove in 2002 for the 5A crown.  Oak Grove finishes their remarkable run for the title at 32 and 8.  Madison Central, which lost to Hattiesburg in the 2006 finals, ends the year at 31 and 10.
