HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - We are all born with cataracts, but it's not until we hit about age 50 when there is a chance some of us will have trouble with them. Dr. David Richardson of Hattiesburg Eye Clinic said here is the telltale sign if that time has come for you.

"We recommend cataract surgery when patients are having difficulty, interfering with their daily activities of life," Richardson said.

Richard said if you find yourself seeing glares from lights when you drive at night, or it seems like you can't get your glasses clean enough, then it may be time for cataract surgery.

"As your cataract ages and you get a darker cataract you get less light in your eye," Richardson said.

Richardson said not everyone will have issues with their cataract as they age, but if you do, Hattiesburg Eye Clinic has the new Catalys Laser. He said it's the safest option for cataract surgery.

"Our laser is specifically for cataract surgery," Richardson said. "It makes an opening in the lens, it breaks the cataract, the lens, into very small pieces and we can remove it using much less energy inside your eye."

Richardson said the process is painless and fast.

"With the laser portion, it is 35 seconds. It takes about two to three minutes once the laser has vacuumed the lens out and put the new lens in," he said.

Richarson said since the patient has been looking through a dark lens, because of the cataract, after the Catalys surgery a patient sees light and details ten times greater.

"It's like a totally new world," Richardson said. "Take a patient that is 2200 and they are depressed and can't see, and you remove the cataract and the next day they are smiling and they can see things they haven't seen in 20 years. "
