LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Lamar County was awarded a $30,000 two-year waste tire grant by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, according to an MDEQ press release.
The tire grant will be used to "continue the local waste tire collection for small quantity generators of waste tires," according to the press release. MDEQ also gave Lamar Co. a $22,941 solid waste assistance grant for its white goods collection program.
According to the press release, cities and counties across the state can apply for Solid Waste Assistance Grants through MDEQ.
The grants are used in local communities to do the following:
- Prevent and clean unauthorized dumps
- To aid in hiring local solid waste enforcement officers
- Public education efforts on solid waste disposal, recycling
- To establish programs for white goods, bulky wastes and recyclables.
One could be wondering where these grants come from. According to the press release, funding for waste tire grants is made possible by an account that's funded from a fee charged on the wholesale of every new vehicle sold in the state.
