LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - It's going to be "chili" in Jones County this weekend, whether the temperatures are cold or not. That's because downtown Laurel will be hosting the 4th annual Magnolia State Bank Chili Cook Off Saturday.
The event will raise funds for the Laurel Main Street organization.
Organizers are expecting about 1,500 people to buy tickets so they can sample chili from about 30 competitors. Five judges will have the enviable task of deciding who will receive the $1,000 first prize and a traveling trophy.
"This has kind of become our thing," said Judi Holifield, executive director of Laurel Main Street. "We started four years ago and our goal was let's see if we can get five teams out and the first year we had ten. So, it has just grown and grown and grown," she said.
Last year's cook off had just 16 competitors.
