Mobile home destroyed by fire in East Jones County

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - This is a news release from the Jones County Fire Council

An unoccupied mobile home was destroyed by fire, Monday afternoon, November 10, in East Jones County.

At 2:45 p.m., fire units from Powers, M&M, Glade, and Rustin Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the report of a mobile home on fire at 8 Rushton Road. Sandersville VFD was requested to remain on standby at their station. Upon arrival firefighters found the mobile home fully involved in flames.

The owner of the mobile home said he was using it as a rental, and had a potential renter look at it that morning. While cleaning up the property, he had burned a pile of pine straw, and thought the burn pile was out when he left. Apparently it ignited again, and spread underneath the mobile home, catching it on fire.

Firefighters were able to save a portion of the mobile home, but it was deemed a total loss.

Firefighters remained on scene for an hour and a half performing fire suppression and overhaul operations.

The fire remains under investigation by Jones County Sheriff's Department Fire Investigator Sgt. Scott Gable.

Also responding to the fire scene was Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna.
