ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) - Mississippi's adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Augustus L. Collins, urged students at Jones County Junior College Tuesday to "dream big." Collins was the keynote speaker for an annual black history program at the Bush Fine Arts Auditorium.
In January of 2012, Collins became the first African-American to be appointed adjutant general of the Mississippi National Guard.
He told students to follow their dreams and work hard.
"You can be whatever you choose to be, as long as you're willing to put forth the effort," said Collins. "And you can make a difference, not only in your life, but in the lives of others, if you're willing to be that person that stands up to do the right thing," he said.
Tuesday's program also featured music from Laurel High School's Gospel Choir.
The theme for the event was, "Moving Forward, One Step at a Time."
