CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) - Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center is under new leadership. Friday, Col. Robert S. Parham relinquished command to Col. William B. (Brad) Smith, Jr. in a ceremony at the post headquarters.
Parham was commander for almost three years and is retiring after 26 years of military service.
Smith was deployed to Iraq in 2009 with the Mississippi National Guard's 155th Brigade Combat Team.
"This is to me, like a test I've studied for my entire career and now is the time to take the test and I'm very excited about this opportunity," said Smith, who was also a former assistant professor of military science at Southern Miss.
"I'm proud to hand my command over to Colonel Brad Smith," said Col. Parham. "He's going to carry that torch, carry that flag and he's going to do a fantastic job," Parham said.
Camp Shelby has trained tens of thousands of National Guard and Reserve soldiers for numerous overseas deployments since it became a mobilization station in June 2004.
