LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A dangerous stretch of road along Highway 11 in Lamar County is set to be reconstructed, mainly because of drainage issues.

MDOT leaders hope the project will put an end to wrecks and tragedies. The roadway, just North of Lumberton will be closed while crews put in subsurface drainage.

A year ago this week, two MDOT workers were killed along with a driver who lost control of her car and plowed into the workers who were spreading sand on the highway under a railroad trestle that normally freezes over during extremely cold weather.

Funding is already in place and currently MDOT is working on a permit to work within the easements of the railroad. Once approved, the work can begin hopefully in March.
