Deputy shoots man who tried to run him over, sheriff’s dept. says
OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (WMC) - Another person was shot by a deputy in DeSoto County on Thursday.
DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department says one person was taken to the hospital after being shot by a deputy.
The shooting happened at Bethel Road and Hwy 78 around 2:45 p.m.
Deputies say they were conducting a sting operation searching for sex offenders when the suspect escaped from deputies.
Chief Deputy Justin Smith says the person tried to run over a deputy and was shot. They described the suspect as a “human trafficker.”
“This was a violent offender who tried to kill one of our deputies today,” Smith said.
The person who was shot is in non-critical condition and will be charged with attempted murder.
The shooting comes on the heels of another deputy-involved shooting in DeSoto County.
In Horn Lake, a deputy shot a person during a traffic stop on Goodman Road around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Both deputies who fired shots will be placed on paid leave while Mississippi Bureau of Investigation conducts an investigation into the shootings.
