Southern States Soccer hosting major tournament
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - A semi-professional soccer club is hosting the first round of a major soccer tournament in Hattiesburg.
Southern States Soccer will host and play in the first round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Oakes Training Center located at 4957 Old Hwy 11 in Hattiesburg. General admission tickets are $10.
The Stars earned their place in the tournament due to the team’s success last season.
Southern States Soccer Assistant General Manager and Director of Game Day Operations Connor Brazil says this is a big deal for the team.
“We’re hosting Georgia Revolution which is another team in our division, the NPSL, which is the National Premiere Soccer League,” Brazil said. “And it’s a single-elimination tournament leading all the way up against major league soccer teams. So, it’s kind of all the professional leagues all grouped together in a tournament. It’s pretty competitive, pretty prestigious for U.S. soccer.”
Brazil says they are prepared to postpone the game due to severe weather. He says any updates will be posted on the club’s social media pages.
