JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) - This month’s WDAM 7 and TEC Golden Apple Award Winner is K-6 West Jones Elementary teacher Lorna Harper.

Faculty, staff and students gathered in the library of the school to surprise Harper with the news Tuesday afternoon. Harper was shocked and speechless, but most of all she wanted to let the Pine Belt know she can’t do her job alone.

“I’m so thankful, but Mrs. Smith helps me so much too, so I can’t take all the credit,” Harper said.

Harper’s nominator said that Harper is a great teacher at West Jones Elementary School who led the way at the beginning of an uncertain school year. She took the charge of teaching students and teachers the new way of virtual learning. Harper was speechless at the sentiment and outpouring of appreciation.

“I’m overwhelmed I guess,” Harper said. “Humbled would be a good word, shocked. I work at the best school. WJE is great. I don’t know. I’m just overwhelmed I guess.”

Harper continued to give credit to the other West Jones Elementary teachers, but one teacher said Harper deserves all the credit for going the extra mile and is a hero to the school.
