MSDH: Nearly 600 new COVID-19 cases added to daily tally

JACKSON, Miss. (WDAM) - The Mississippi State Department of Health reported nearly 600 new daily COVID-19 cases across the state.

MSDH reported 576 additional cases and 22 new deaths Saturday statewide.

The latest figures brought the state’s total cases and deaths since March 2020 to 297,321 and 6,805 deaths.

Ten deaths were reported between Jan. 1-March 5.  Another 12 deaths were discovered through a review of death certificates between Jan. 23-Feb. 28.

Positive test results may have been made during the past several days and represent individuals who became ill a week ago or more.

In the eight Pine Belt counties, 32,276 COVID-19 cases and 646 deaths have been reported since March 2020:

  • Covington: 2,502 cases, 80 deaths
  • Forrest: 7,289 cases, 138 deaths
  • Jasper: 2,141 cases, 45 deaths
  • Jones: 8,035 cases, 148 deaths
  • Lamar: 5,933 cases, 81 deaths
  • Marion: 2,588 cases, 78 deaths
  • Perry: 1,232 cases, 35 deaths
  • Wayne: 2,556 cases, 41 deaths

MSDH also is reporting 278,162 Mississippians are presumed to have recovered from the coronavirus.

Health officials said patients must have symptoms of COVID-19, which include a fever of 100.4 and severe cough or chest pain, to be tested. Anyone wanting to be tested should call ahead to make arrangements first.

To date, 2,472,673 people have been tested for coronavirus in Mississippi.
