MBI: HPD officer involved in shooting near HHS

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - One person is injured after shots were fired near Hattiesburg High School Wednesday morning.

According to Hattiesburg Police Department spokesperson Ryan Moore, officers responded to a report of someone having possession of a weapon near HHS at Hutchinson Avenue and 4th Street before 8 a.m.

Officers found the individual with the weapon near West 5th Street and Oliver Avenue and attempted to approach him.

At that time, shots were fired and the male individual was struck. He was later transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries, and the scene was secured.

An HPD officer was involved in shooting the male individual, according to Maj. Johnny Poulos of the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

The names of the officer and the male subject have not been released at this time.

MBI has been contacted to handle the investigation.

Hattiesburg Public School District Superintendent Robert Williams released a statement regarding the shooting and their involvement in the investigation:

“Hattiesburg Public School District has been made aware of an incident off campus that occurred Wednesday morning prior to school beginning.

Hattiesburg Public School District resource officers are cooperating with officials on the investigation. Anyone with additional information can contact the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.”
