Mississippi daily COVID-19 tally rises by nearly 1,800

JACKSON, Miss. (WDAM) - The Mississippi State Department of Health reported nearly 1,800 newly confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state.

MSDH reported 1,784 new COVID-19 cases and 32 additional deaths Sunday.

Four new deaths were reported between Dec. 14-Jan. 2, while another 28 deaths were discovered during a review of death certificates between Nov. 7-Dec. 28, including two in Marion County and another in Jasper County.

The latest figures brought the state’s total cases and deaths since March to 222,061 and 4,871.

Positive test results may have been made during the past several days and represent individuals who became ill a week ago or more.

In the eight Pine Belt counties, 22,825 COVID-19 cases and 479 deaths have been reported:

  • Covington: 1,896 cases, 68 deaths
  • Forrest: 5,375 cases, 104 deaths
  • Jasper: 1,491 cases, 26 deaths
  • Jones: 5,381 cases, 98 deaths
  • Lamar: 4,245 cases, 60 deaths
  • Marion: 1,794 cases, 65 deaths
  • Perry: 908 cases, 31 deaths
  • Wayne: 1,735 cases, 27 deaths

MSDH also is reporting 167,263 Mississippians are presumed to have recovered from the coronavirus.

Health officials said patients must have symptoms of COVID-19, which include a fever of 100.4 and severe cough or chest pain, to be tested. Anyone wanting to be tested should call ahead to make arrangements first.

To date, 1,730,435 people have been tested for coronavirus in Mississippi.
