Mississippi’s daily COVID-19 cases jump another 2,575

JACKSON, Miss. (WDAM) - The Mississippi State Department of Health reported nearly another 2,600 newly confirmed daily COVID-19 cases in the state.

MSDH reported 2,575 new COVID-19 cases and 29 additional deaths Friday.

Eleven new deaths were reported between Dec. 19-31, including one in Forrest County, while another 18 deaths were discovered during a review of death certificates between Nov. 11-Dec. 28.

The latest figures brought the state’s total cases and deaths since March to 218,386 and 4,816.

Positive test results may have been made during the past several days and represent individuals who became ill a week ago or more.

In the eight Pine Belt counties, 22,430 COVID-19 cases and 471 deaths have been reported:

  • Covington: 1,858 cases, 67 deaths
  • Forrest: 5,041 cases, 102 deaths
  • Jasper: 1,467 cases, 25 deaths
  • Jones: 5,288 cases, 97 deaths
  • Lamar: 4,162 cases, 60 deaths
  • Marion: 1,775 cases, 63 deaths
  • Perry: 890 cases, 30 deaths
  • Wayne: 1,698 cases, 27 deaths

MSDH also is reporting 167,263 Mississippians are presumed to have recovered from the coronavirus.

Health officials said patients must have symptoms of COVID-19, which include a fever of 100.4 and severe cough or chest pain, to be tested. Anyone wanting to be tested should call ahead to make arrangements first.

To date, 1,730,435 people have been tested for coronavirus in Mississippi.
