Mississippi’s coronavirus cases jump another 2,665 in 1 day

JACKSON, Miss. (WDAM) _ The Mississippi State Department of Health reports the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the state is nearing 178,000.

MSDH reported 2,665 new COVID-19 cases and 56 additional deaths Saturday, including 32 between Nov. 20 and Dec. 11 and another 24 discovered through death certificates from Nov. 5 through Dec. 6.

Three new deaths were reported in Covington County and one each in Forrest, Jefferson Davis and Marion counties, while one in Jones County and another Marion County were discovered in the death certificate review.

The latest numbers brought the state’s total cases and deaths since March to 177,947 and 4,180

Positive test results may have been made during the past several days and represent individuals who became ill a week ago or more.

In the 10 Pine Belt counties, 19,774 COVID-19 cases and 468 deaths have been reported:

  • Covington: 1,562 cases, 61 deaths
  • Forrest: 4,413 cases, 92 deaths
  • Greene: 838 cases, 24 deaths
  • Jasper: 1,030 cases, 24 deaths
  • Jefferson Davis: 652 cases, 19 deaths
  • Jones: 4,277 cases, 91 deaths
  • Lamar: 3,411 cases, 51 deaths
  • Marion: 1,429 cases, 54 deaths
  • Perry: 739 cases, 27 deaths
  • Wayne: 1,423 cases, 25 deaths

MSDH also is reporting 136,627 Mississippians are presumed to have recovered from the coronavirus.

Health officials said patients must have symptoms of COVID-19, which include a fever of 100.4 and severe cough or chest pain, to be tested. Anyone wanting to be tested should call ahead to make arrangements first.

To date, 1,490,817 people have been tested for coronavirus in Mississippi.
