HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - One Hattiesburg church served up some special holiday food Saturday, but it had nothing to do with turkeys.
The members of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension sold quarts of their “Famous Seafood Gumbo” during an annual fundraising event at the church.
It’s a Thanksgiving tradition that goes back more than 30 years.
More than 1,300 quarts were prepared for sale.
“It’s a great way for our church to get together because we have to have stirrers for the pots,” said Keith Montgomery, gumbo cook for the event. “We call it the ‘Ministry of the Pots’ is what we call it and it takes about twelve hours to cook.”
Church members will be cooking up gumbo for sale again, on the weekend before the Super Bowl.
