Player of the Week - Kabe Barnett next in line at Oak Grove

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - He makes it sound easy.

“I just trust the [offensive line] to not let any [defensive] lineman, linebacker touch me and then [I] just give the receiver a chance to catch the ball,” said Oak Grove junior quarterback Kabe Barnett.

Quite frankly, Barnett makes it look easy – 1,454 yards passing, 25 touchdowns to just three interceptions so far this season.

However, following future college quarterbacks John Rhys Plumlee and Damon Stewart is anything but easy.

“For [Barnett], you followed around two guys, both of 'em are playing college football right now,” said Oak Grove head coach Drew Causey. “Both of 'em were different and to be able to learn the different things that both of them did well and try to put that to his game has been really nice to see.”

“I just knew this year was my year to go get a ring,” Barnett said. The Warriors are well on their way to that goal.

A program that’s won 23 games and two South State titles in two seasons has never started 8-0 under Drew Causey – until 2020. The “cool-as-a-cucumber” Kabe Barnett has been a major part of that success.

Perhaps his most efficient Friday of the season came in Oak Grove’s 47-7 win over Pearl – Barnett completed 12 of 18 passes for 277 yards and five touchdowns while running for a sixth score.

“His leadership keeps getting better every week,” Causey said. “On Sunday’s when we have coaches meetings, he’ll show up with some things that he’s seen on film that he likes. That’s really big for us because if a player believes in a play or believes in something, I think they execute it a lot better than if it’s something that they don’t believe in. He’s just done a great job all around and just really proud of him.”

But Barnett and the Warriors aren’t satisfied with eight wins.

They’re after the ultimate prize that’s eluded Oak Grove since 2013 – a state championship.

“We need to come together, play as one and just keep dominating,” Barnett said.

“To me it’s about the way we prepare each week,” Causey said. “If our guys show up for practice the right way and we prepare each day the right way, I think we have a good chance to win a ball game.”
