HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - A fire early Sunday evening that swept through a Hattiesburg apartment complex sent one person to the hospital and had firefighters on the scene well into the night.

Hattiesburg firefighters responded to a call that came in at 6:50 p.m. at the 22-unit Merimac Apartments in the 600 block of North 25th Avenue.

The complex sits about a block east of U.S. Highway 49 North and a half block south of West Seventh Street.

Arriving on scene, a man was found lying in the concrete parking/courtyard area of the U-shaped complex, suffering from injuries that appeared to be caused by a fall, a Hattiesburg Fire Department official said.

The man was transported to a local hospital. The extent of his injuries was unavailable Sunday night.

A resident, Betty Tapplar, said the fire began at one end of the complex in a corner unit on the second-floor.

The fire quickly spread, involving the rest of the complex.

Nearly two hours in, a large ladder boom that was keeping a steady spray on the south part of the complex turned the pressure up, shedding shingles to knock out hotspots between the roof and attic/ceiling areas.

HFD Assistant Chief Danny Wade said members of the State Fire Marshal’s Office will be in Hattiesburg on Monday to assist with the investigation into what caused the fire.
