PETAL, Miss. (WDAM) - Serving families, children and the homeless for 30 years, Petal Children’s Task Force Executive Director Demaris Lee help start the organization with a mission of helping people.

From giving out food boxes like you see being made on this day to serving the homeless with basic necessities, Lee says volunteers make this multi-prong mission possible.

“Our mission is to make sure no one goes hungry. So, we make sure everyone has something to eat," Lee said.

Teaming up with the area school district, right now the volunteer-based task force is gearing up for the holidays. Shelves are bare and donations are needed to serve area children while they are out of school for the holidays.

“We are in dire need of some food," Lee said. “We need spaghetti and sauce, anything the children can eat during the holidays. Other items like cereal, pancake mix, syrup, grits, pop tarts, and peanut butter and jelly. We are in desperate need of jelly right now. Anything that is non-perishable, but now we can take perishable as well because we have a walk-in freezer.”

Lee said this need is critical and she and her team are working to make an impact.

“Well, you think we are not someone that is needed, and I guess everyone can think of their community in that way," Lee said. "But, there are people that are really in need. So, they just need a little bit of help and we are here to help them.”

The task force serves hundreds of families every single month which Lee says is built on the foundation of a generous community.

“We have a barrel in Corner Market that you can put food in," Lee said. "We have a lot of people that will bring food in and put it in there. Or, they will buy it while they are in the Corner Market. I would like to give a big shoutout for Corner Market because they help us so much that way. Without them having that barrel there would be food that we would not get. So, it’s so easy to buy it, drop it off and you don’t have to make an extra stop.”

Lee said another big item needed is milk. If you would like to make a donation or volunteer you can call the Petal Children’s Task Force, which is located on South George Avenue, at (601)-255-5578.
