Hattiesburg officer gets suspended jail sentence for off duty assault

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - A Hattiesburg police officer was in court Wednesday facing a simple assault charge for allegedly hitting a person while off duty.

According to a police report, Cory Shumock hit the victim in the neck while at a bar in Hattiesburg.

Justice Court Judge Robert Davis gave Shumock a 30-day suspended jail sentence and six months of unsupervised probation. Shumock was also ordered to pay nearly $800 in fines and court fees.
