JONES COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) - An attempted traffic stop ended in a drug arrest Thursday morning in Jones County after the driver fled from law enforcement.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Office said Mississippi Highway Patrol tried to pull over 25-year-old Xavier Evans, of Ellisville, for a traffic violation. Evans did not stop and law enforcement chased him as he headed north on Highway 11 toward Ellisville.

The Ellisville Police Department and the Jones County Sheriff’s Office joined the pursuit, which ended at a home just off of Hill Street in Ellisville, according to JCSO.

Evans reportedly ran inside a home carrying a backpack, leaving a woman in his car. Investigators determined that Evans knew the owner of the home.

JCSO said Evans came out of the home after a few minutes and Jones County Narcotics Officers received permission to search the property.

Officers discovered a backpack wrapped in a shirt inside a deep freezer inside the home. Inside, officers found several individual bags of high-grade marijuana and one large container substance, as well as a gun.

Evans was charged with felony fleeing in a motor vehicle, possession with intent while in possession of a firearm and weapon possession by a convicted felon.

The Jones County Narcotics Division adopted the case from MHP.
