PETAL, Miss. (WDAM) -The Mississippi Highway Patrol honored troopers who lost their lives in the line of duty on Sunday afternoon.

At Hillcrest Cemetery in Petal, four troopers saluted and placed a wreath at the grave of fallen Trooper George Danny Nash Jr.

Nash was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop on February 4, 1983, on Highway 84. He was 23 years old at the time of his death and had been a trooper for three months.

MHP spokesman Travis Luck said the memorial service is just their way of paying their respects to those lost in the line of duty.

“It warms the heart of all troopers to still have the know that we all care for each other,” said Luck. “When we bury one of our own, we just want families to know that they’re never forgotten and will always be here.”

A section of Highway 84, in Franklin County, was dedicated in Trooper Nash’s memory.
