HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - National Police Week in the Hub City wrapped up on Saturday with a challenging event honoring fallen officers and raising money for the Hattiesburg Police Department’s Benevolent Fund.
The second annual “Blue Line Challenge” took place at the Hattiesburg Police and Fire Training Academy.
More than 150 people participated in the 5K event, which included about a dozen obstacles. Each leg of the course honored a Hattiesburg Police officer who was killed in the line of duty.
“We can't thank the community enough,” Hattiesburg Police Department Public Information Officer Ryan Moore said. “For everybody to come out and show their support, but not only just our local community, people from Alabama, Louisiana, North Mississippi, all across the state.”
“I think it's important for us to exercise and also this is an event where we're really honoring our fallen police officers and I think it's just important to come,” race participant Jaclyn Coleman said.
“I love it, it was fun, I got muddy and I just like doing it for our police officers here,” race participant Stephanie Campos said. “I appreciate what they do.”
Last year’s event was held at Tatum Park.
