PEARL, Miss. (WDAM) - The community of Soso longed for victory.
West Jones saw its 2018 football team and 2019 girls basketball team fall just short of their respective state championship runs. The baseball program provided a long-awaited celebration.
The Mustangs defeated Lafayette 7-2 on Thursday, capturing the school’s first baseball state championship.
The journey began three years ago with the hiring of West Jones alum and USM’s all-time hits leader Trey Sutton as head coach. In just three short seasons, Sutton brought the Mustangs to their third state title and a class 5A crown.
After taking game one from Lafayette 10-1 on Wednesday, West Jones trailed the Commodores 1-0 headed to the fourth inning of Thursday’s game two. Cole Tolbert’s single to left scored Garrett McLaurin for the equalizer.
West Jones took the lead for good in the fifth inning after Southern Miss signee Dustin Dickerson tripled home two runs.
The state champion Mustangs finish the season 29-5.
