PEARL, Miss. (WLBT) - The Pearl Police Department received a call from a local jewelry store on Tuesday in reference to an elderly man who was strong-arm-robbed by a younger male.
The 78-year-old victim had a ring forcefully removed from his shirt pocket while sitting in his vehicle.
The man who stole the ring was later identified as Emmerson Alfonso Patterson of New Orleans. He then left the scene.
Patrol officers searched the area and eventually located Patterson inside Walmart. After being confronted by officers, Patterson attempted to avoid arrest by literally climbing and jumping over fruit and vegetable display units. A Patrol Sergeant was able to catch him and take him safely into custody.
The stolen jewelry was located in Patterson’s pant pocket.
Detectives later determined that Patterson approached the victim in the jeweler’s parking lot and asked for directions to Walmart. The “good Samaritan” provided Patterson with directions and Patterson then demanded the man give him a ride to Walmart, which he declined.
According to the victim, Patterson then reached inside his vehicle and stole the jewelry from his shirt pocket.
The 78-year-old man was not harmed and his property was quickly recovered and returned.
Patterson was charged with one count of robbery and a count each for disorderly conduct of a business and resisting arrest. He was transported to the Rankin County Jail with a $260,000 written bond.
The case will be presented by the Pearl Police Department to a Rankin County Grand Jury for indictment.
