Pine Belt celebrates National Women’s Health Week with free screenings

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Women in the Pine Belt had the chance to learn more about themselves at the Women’s Health Center in Hattiesburg Wednesday. The Women’s Health Center at Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative gave women like Amanda Fair with no health insurance a free check-up.

Fair said during her waiting period after screenings that everything was good and moving at a fast pace.

“I come to get all the work done and I don’t have health insurance, and I think this was a good opportunity for me to get things checked that need to be checked for a woman,” said Fair.

Fair said that because she does not have health insurance, she can’t visit the doctor’s office as normal as she would like. So, events like this are a big help.

“Mostly for the black race, we don’t come out to the doctor like we should," Fair said. “So we need to be checked now to make sure because it’s cancer, all kinds of different diseases out there.”

WDAM talked with Nurse Practitioner Candace Johnson and she said that women get a chance to take variety of tests.

“Women to come see their women’s health care physician to be aware of their numbers so that they’ll know,” said Johnson.

According to the website, free screenings will also be provided at clinic locations in Beaumont, Brooklyn, Lumberton, New Augusta, Picayune, Seminary and Sumrall, excluding dental and HIV screenings all week, May 13 – 17.
