HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The City of Hattiesburg plans to combat mosquito season by placing traps throughout the city to test for diseases.

In addition to mosquito spraying, the Public Works Department will place mosquito traps this week in each ward to measure quantity in an area and to test for diseases they may carry.

The city says this is a proactive approach to quantify what the mosquito season is like and to provide valuable data back to the health department.

Mosquitoes caught in the traps will be frozen and sent to the Mississippi Department of Health for testing.

This trapping process is a part of a $45,000 grant given to Hattiesburg for its mosquito management program from the Mississippi Department of Health.

City officials say only one trap will be placed in each ward, but will be moved periodically throughout the area.

If citizens would like to request a trap for their property, they can call 601-545-4648.
