USM suffers first shutout of season in 4-0 loss at Rice

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Holding onto a one-game lead over FAU in the Conference USA standings, Southern Miss entered Saturday’s contest at Rice with little room for error with just five league games remaining.

The Golden Eagles faltered, falling to the Owls 4-0 in their first shutout of the season.

FAU’s Evan Kravetz struck out ten batters – USM struck out 13 times as a team, put up just three hits and left nine runners on base.

Stevie Powers (3-4) struck out five and gave up 6 hits in 5.2 innings pitched.

USM (32-16, 19-7 C-USA) remain one game ahead of FAU as the Owls fell at UTSA on Saturday. The Eagles look to win the series in Houston on Sunday at 1 p.m.
