COLLINS, MS (WDAM) - Quick action by Collins firefighters Friday afternoon helped prevent a storage tank fire from getting out of control.
The fire happened at a gas storage tank at the Trans-Montaigne facility on Highway 588.
It stared after the tank was struck by lightning.
Firefighters and company employees worked for about six hours to get the fire under control.
No one was injured and damage to the tank was minimal.
“The likelihood is they’ll be able to go in and replace the gauging platform pipe areas to get those replaced, check the seals for integrity and all and very likely there will have to be minimal repairs have to be made to this tank, clean it and get it back into safe service,” said John Pope, chief of the Collins Fire Department.
About one dozen Collins firefighters worked the fire.
Some of them remained on the scene Saturday to monitor the situation.
