CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) - Camp Shelby is gearing up for a busy summer of annual training.
In addition to National Guard units from Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee that will do their usual training at the post, Camp Shelby will welcome 5,000 members of Florida’s 53rd Brigade Combat Team for weeks of intensive training.
And later this summer, for the first time, 6,000 troops from the 25th Division, based in Alaska, will train at the post.
“Usually, the (annual training period) goes through the end of September, this year, we’ll have brigades in here starting now and they’ll go all the way through the end of October and the middle of November, which is good for Camp Shelby, good for the Mississippi National Guard and the State of Mississippi, of course,” said Col. Bobby Ginn, commander of Camp Shelby.
Ginn says the training for the soldiers in the 25th Division will include a large-scale airborne operation.
