West Jones advances to 5A state championship

CARRIERE, MS (WDAM) - Trey Sutton knows the feeling of defeat in a South State Championship series. Now he knows the feeling of victory.

West Jones took down Pearl River Central 8-3 on Friday to sweep the class 5A South State series and advance to the school’s third state championship.

"I just love this bunch of kids,” said Sutton, in his third season as head coach of his alma mater West Jones. “It means so much to me as a coach having been a player here and been in this situation in South State and falling short. They stepped up and they've done an outstanding job since we've been in the playoffs."

Senior Kris Riley was stellar on the mound for the Mustangs. The PRCC signee struck out nine batters and gave up just one hit in 6.2 innings.

West Jones opens the 5A state championship on Tuesday at Trustmark Park in Pearl. The Mustangs await the winner of Lafayette vs. Saltillo.
