MDOT encourages drivers to drive safely and avoid distracted driving

MISSISSIPPI (WDAM) - It’s important you are not distracted while driving, especially when it comes to driving through work zones.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation continues to remind drivers of the importance as road work is underway.

“In Mississippi, spring and summer are the prime seasons for road construction and maintenance projects," MDOT Executive Director Melinda McGrath said. "Such as mowing, laying asphalt, pothole patching and bridge repairs. These projects require MDOT to have work zones in place to protect themselves and the motorist.”

As road projects are underway in the Pine Belt and across our state, the Mississippi Department of Transportation continues to remind drivers of safety when traveling through those work zones day and night.

“Mississippi’s highway workers put themselves in harms way each and every day," McGrath said. "Working beside vehicles traveling at high speeds is dangerous. They work as safe as possible, but the environment can be unpredictable.”

MDOT Executive Director Melinda McGrath said it’s critical drivers avoid distractions while behind the wheel.

“MDOT’s number one goal is safety for the traveling public and highway workers," McGrath said. "Highway workers depend on the motorists to navigate safely through the work zone.”

MDOT encourages drivers to think smart and remember these tips at all times while on the road.

“We need you, the traveling public, to help," McGrath said. "You can make work zones safer by, slowing down and paying attention, avoiding distractions and obeying all advanced warning posted speed limit signs. Let’s all work together to improve work zone safety so they highway workers will arrive home and you will reach your destination, safely.”
