Southbound lanes of I-59 reopened near Evelyn Gandy Parkway

FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - The southbound lanes of Interstate 59 near Evelyn Gandy Parkway have reopened. The interstate was closed to southbound traffic for hours after an 18-wheeler overturned on the bridge over the Bouie River.

According to the Mississippi Department of Transportation, the crash happened around 2 a.m. Friday. The Hattiesburg Police Department announced both southbound lanes were closed just after 5 a.m.

The closure caused major traffic delays on I-59 south and on U.S. Highway 11, which was used as a detour for diverted interstate traffic.

HPD said an 18-wheeler and passenger vehicle were involved in the crash. Three people were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
