LUMBERTON, MS (WDAM) - Adam Jones is the newest chief of police in the city of Lumberton.
Jones has been with the Lumberton Police Department for the last two years. He said he has always wanted to have a career in law enforcement.
“I grew up around law enforcement. A lot of my friends and family friends police officers. As a young man, I kind of got off the beaten path. I had a police officer that cared about me and pulled me to the side and gave me a reality check. From that day forth, I wanted to be a police officer, I wanted to be that guy,” explained Jones.
Jones began his civilian law enforcement career in Laurel. He explained had it not been for the guidance of the late Tyrone Stewart, he would not have made it to where he is now.
"He kind of took me under his wing and gave me a chance. He had big plans for me, as he would say, I have big plans for you. He gave me a chance and I appreciate that,” said Jones.
Jones said he plans to increase the number of patrol officers, upgrade the department’s vehicles, and get his team more training.
His overall goal is to create a more well-rounded department.
"Every agency I’ve been with has been well-rounded. When I got here, this was a good department, but I saw that it could be better,” said Jones.
Jones also wants to work on getting drugs out of Lumberton.
"That’s one of my main goals is to get the drugs off the streets. I believe we’ll be headed to more greatness,” said Jones.
Jones has been the interim chief since the end of March.
