West Jones and Pearl River Central meet in playoffs for 3rd straight year

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - West Jones returns to the South State finals for the second straight season on Wednesday.

And for the third straight year, the Mustangs meet Pearl River Central in the playoffs.

USM’s all-time leader in hits Trey Sutton has led West Jones to 25-5 in his third season with a 4-0 mark in the playoffs.

“Just like last year, I think we pitch and play defense pretty well,” said West Jones senior shortstop Dustin Dickerson, a Southern Miss signee. “The bats are going to be off and on like always because, just baseball. If you don’t make errors and you pitch well, it’s tough to beat you.”

“Where we start, ground zero, is pitching and defense,” Sutton said. “As hitters, even teams that hit well, you’re going to run into nights where you face an arm that you can’t figure out or you just don’t have it. But if you pitch and play defense, you kind of find that you’re in every game. You get to this point in the season, in the playoffs, everybody’s good. Limiting your mistakes and coming through in big spots is what’s going to be the difference.”

West Jones hosts Pearl River Central in game one of the class 5A South State series on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
