Community mourns tragic death of Laurel first-grader
Laurel Police Chief Tommy Cox confirmed on Tuesday that a child was struck by a car between the football field and Laurel High School on Monday, around 6 p.m.

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Family and friends in the Laurel community are mourning after the death of a first-grade student.

Laurel Police Chief Tommy Cox confirmed on Tuesday that a child was struck by a car between the football field and Laurel High School on Monday, around 6 p.m.

Members of the community said the child was participating in track activities around the time of the tragedy.

Police are waiting to release the identity of the child until all family is notified.

“This is still under investigation, but as of now, it appears to be a tragic accident,” Cox said.

The Laurel School District issued a statement about the incident on Facebook.
