HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - One Pine Belt health clinic is working to improve health care for women in the community.
WDAM sat down with a nurse practitioner from Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative Inc. to talk about the upcoming National Women's Health Week where all women are invited to a, "free check-up day."
Royce Fairley said, "I think it's a great idea the clinic offers the free screenings. I think the people in the community should come out and take advantage of it."
“I think everyone should get out and get checked," Elaine Roberts said.
With a mission of providing access to affordable primary and preventative health care to the community, the Women’s Health Center at Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative is opening its doors for all women to receive a number of free screenings in conjunction with National Women’s Health Week.
“National Women’s Health Week is an opportunity for us to encourage women to make their health a priority by getting their preventative health care screenings," Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative, Inc. Women’s Health Center Nurse Practitioner Candace Johnson said.
Backing the slogan “It’s your time; Get Inspired. Get Healthy,” Women’s Health Center Nurse Practitioner Candace Johnson said from cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose and clinical breast exams to HIV testing, staff inside will be testing women for a number of different conditions so they leave informed and know more about their body.
Johnson said it’s important because these screenings can can prevent some chronic diseases.
“These preventative health care screenings will give clinical guidance about specific disease types," Johnson said. "For example, diabetes and high blood pressure.”
“It’s free," Roberts said. "All the women in the area, it’s a good idea to get your body checked.”
“It actually benefits because if there is an issue going on with them they can follow up with their doctors to have everything checked out," Fairley said.
The event is free of charge and all women are welcome.
The event is happening on Wednesday, May 15 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the Women’s Health Center on Old Airport Road in Hattiesburg.
