JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Officials with Mississippi Highway Patrol have identified the woman killed in a crash that shut down the southbound lanes of Interstate 59 in Jones County on Tuesday afternoon.

MHP Troop J spokesman Sgt. Travis Luck said 30-year-old Savannah Newell, of Laurel, was killed in the collision.

According to Luck, the crash happened when the vehicle Newell was driving slammed into the back of an 18-wheeler stopped on the interstate due to a construction zone. Luck said Newell died at the scene, and the driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to a hospital to be checked for injuries.

The crash shut down the southbound lanes of the interstate near the 90 mile marker, causing major traffic delays. Traffic had to diverted onto U.S. Highway 11 at exit 93 in Laurel while crews worked to clear the scene.

The flow of traffic on the interstate has since returned to normal.
