HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) _ The American Red Cross estimates that home fires kill about seven people and injure another 30 every day.
The charitable organization is trying to do something to lower those numbers.
Saturday, Red Cross volunteers, joined by members of the Hattiesburg Fire Department, will canvass selected city neighborhoods and offer free smoke detectors.
The service is part of the Red Cross’ “Sound The Alarm/Save A Life” program, which offers fire-safety information along with the installation of 10-year, lithium-battery smoke alarms.
The program hopes to install 100,000 free alarms in 100 cities between April 27 and May 11.
