HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - It’s tournament time for the Crusaders.
William Carey (23-24, 15-11 Southern States Athletic Conference) opens the SSAC tourney as a 6-seed against 3-seeded Mobile on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Montgomery, Alabama.
Senior J.C. Sanner gets the start on the mound for WCU. The Oak Grove grad is 5-3 with a 2.61 ERA, leading the team with 58 strikeouts.
Carey took the regular season series over Mobile, two games to one.
The Crusaders finished the regular season with wins in ten of its final 12 games. However, coach Bobby Halford believes winning the conference tournament is Carey’s only shot of making it back to the NAIA national tournament.
“We feel like we have to win this tournament to keep playing.” Halford said. “That’s what we’ve been telling ‘em the last few weeks. We’re not going to get any help any other kind of way because our record hasn’t been what it needs to be. The good thing is we’ve played such a strong schedule, that hopefully it’s prepared us for this. We’re up for the challenge.”
The Carey softball team enters the SSAC tournament on Thursday as the No. 2 seed. The Lady Crusaders (36-12, 24-8 SSAC) battle Blue Mountain at 12 p.m. in Decatur, Alabama.
