JACKSON, MS (WDAM) - After nearly 50 years of coaching baseball, Hill Denson stepped away from the game he loves on Friday afternoon.
The Bay Springs native coached his final two ball games at Belhaven University – the Blazers split a doubleheader with McMurry.
Denson’s 19 years at Belhaven were preceded by 14 unforgettable seasons at Southern Miss. Denson compiled a record of 468-386-2 in Hattiesburg, leading the Golden Eagles to their first NCAA tournaments in 1990 and 1991.
“I keep telling everybody I still haven’t decided exactly what I’m going to do in life but I’ve been hanging around trying to do this for a long time,” Denson said. “I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s unbelievable to me that I could live this long and be paid for something that I love doing all the time. I’ve never considered it a job. It’s quite an honor and it’s unbelievable when I look back at the way things happened.”
