PINE BELT (WDAM) - Storm shelters in Forrest, Lamar and Jones counties have opened for people needing a safe place to stay during the strong storms expected to blow through the Pine Belt this evening.

These shelters will remain open through the severe weather event:

  • Lamar County Community Shelter: 105 Central Industrial Row in Purvis
  • Forrest County 361 Shelter: 946 Sullivan Drive in Hattiesburg
  • Jones County FEMA 361 Shelter: 1425 Ellisville Boulevard in Laurel

The Storm Prediction Center has the Pine Belt under an enhanced risk for severe weather on Thursday evening. The timeline for severe weather in the Pine Belt is from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Because of the threat for severe weather, the First Alert Weather Team has designated Thursday as a First Alert Weather Day.
