HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Just six days after Doc Sadler resigned from his post as head coach of USM basketball, it appears Jeremy McClain has made his first hire as athletic director of Southern Miss.

Jay Ladner has been hired as head coach of Golden Eagle basketball, first reported by Jeff Goodman of WatchStadium.com.

A Hattiesburg native, Ladner has spent the last five seasons as head coach of Southeastern Louisiana. The Lions are 76-88 under Ladner with a 2018 Southland Conference regular season title and appearance in the NIT.

Prior to his time in Hammond, Ladner led Jones County Junior College to its first NJCAA national championship in 2014. The Oak Grove grad coached one season at his alma mater and 20 years at St. Stanislaus where he won the 2011 class 4A state title. Ladner has a 511-189 career high school coaching record.

Ladner graduated from Southern Miss in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in pre-medicine/biology. He played for USM’s winningest coach in school history M.K. Turk and was a member of the Golden Eagles’ 1987 NIT championship team.
