JASPER COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - One Laurel-based company is working to making transportation an option for all residents in Jasper County. DJ Transit, Inc. expanded their services to those in the area in an effort to meet what officials describe as a growing need.
“We get a lot of calls from Jasper County just needing transportation services in Jasper County,” said DJ Transit, Inc. executive director Deshella Butler. “There’s really no form of transportation in that county that’s open to the public.”
Butler says the idea to expand services was presented to the Jasper County Board of Supervisors who agreed that making transportation available to all was a beneficial plan.
“We think it’s a good service for our seniors and handicapped individuals,” said Jasper County Board of Supervisors president Curtis Gray.
DJ Transit, Inc. is contracted by the Mississippi Department of Transportation to provide services in rural areas, according to Butler. On a weekly basis, the company serves more than 40 people many of which are elderly or disabled. The service, which started in Laurel back in 2013, is by request and based on availability. The cost is $4 per stop.
“Our mission is to improve the quality of life for our residents of South Mississippi by offering affordable and reliable transportation,” Butler said.
