HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Organizers have been busy all day getting everything prepped and ready to go for Saturday’s Mardi Gras parade in Hattiesburg.
More than 50 floats and paraders are expected to take to the streets for the event. Organizers are expecting more than 60,000 spectators at this year’s event.
"We’re very excited about it, to bring it back. We were not able to do it last year because of the rain conditions, but this year will be our 7th year to do it,” said Virginia with Keith’s Superstores.
Beads, cups, t-shirts and many other things will be thrown out to the crowds. Local businesses will also be selling food and other things during the parade.
"We’ve got Papa John’s who will be selling pizza throughout the crowd and the day. We will also be selling Mardi Gras T-shirts, Jody’s King Cakes, there will be local businesses along the route that will have special promotions throughout the day. We just get the community involved,” said Virginia.
This year Keith’s Superstores has decided to highlight the Homes of Hope for Children float. Homes of Hope is a Christian-based organization that provides homes to children facing crisis in the state.
"Keith Superstores is a huge family orientated, children’s organization that we like to give back to the community and the children. We spotlight, with our fundraisers, certain children’s organizations to give back to. We’ve done St. Jude’s, Children’s of Mississippi,” said Virginia.
The parade route will start on Fourth Street, turn onto Hardy Street, and then end at Morningside Drive. It will start at 11 a.m.
Organizers say they will have the parade rain or shine and encourage people to keep their rain gear handy.
