HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) _ The University of Southern Mississippi announced two time shifts on Saturday, March 9, for Golden Eagles men’s basketball and baseball games.
Originally set for 5 p.m., USM’s men’s basketball regular-season finale against the University of Texas-San Antonio will tip at 2 p.m. at Reed Green Coliseum.
USM’s baseball game, originally set for a 2 p.m. first pitch, now will start at 4 p.m. The Golden Eagles will face Holy Cross University in a three-game set that weekend.
Four former University of Southern Mississippi baseball players are expected to be in spring training camps this month.
The quartet includes
- Infielder Brian Dozier, who split time last season with the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Dodgers, He signed a one-year, free-agent deal during the offseason with Washington, where he is expected to be the National’ everyday second baseman
- Pitcher Cody Carroll, who was drafted by the New York Yankees in 2015, made his major-league debut last August after being traded to the Baltimore Orioles. Carroll, who was part of a three-man package that brought left-hander Zach Britton to New York, is on the Orioles’ 40-man roster
- Pitcher Scott Copeland, who had short stints in the Bigs with Toronto Blue Jays (2015) and New York Mets (2018), signed a deal with Washington in the offseason and is non-roster invitee to the Nationals’ camp. He and Dozier were teammates on USM’s 2009 World Series team
- Catcher Chuckie Robinson, a 2016 draftee of the Houston Astros, was invited to camp this season. Robinson, a 21st-round selection, reached the High A/Carolina League, where he hit .238 with seven home runs and 30 RBIs with the Buies Creek (N.C.) Astros.
