BAY SPRINGS, MS (WDAM) - Students at Bay Springs Middle School will start the 2019-2020 school year in a new building. Construction is taking place on the campus, which will also be on the grounds of Bay Springs High School and Bay Springs Elementary School.
"We’re real excited about it,” said West Jasper Consolidated School District superintendent Warren Woodrow. “We think it’s going to be a great addition to the school system.”
Students in grades sixth through eighth are currently housed in what Woodrow calls the middle school complex, which is roughly a mile from the main campus.
“We’re real excited to get those children over here and let them be a part of the high school community and be more involved in the athletic events and some of the social things we do over here with them,” Woodrow said. “We think it’s going to be a positive.”
Woodrow says the complex, which includes multiple buildings was built in the 50s. He adds that with enrollment down to about 160 students, they have more space than necessary.
“I just thought it would be better for our students academically and socially to get them on-campus with the elementary and high school,” he said of the move. “I think that we can do a better job of hopefully educating them and I think it’s going to be a positive overall.”
The building is set to be completed in June.
