HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) _ University of Southern Mississippi junior shortstop Lacey Sumerlin had a pretty good weekend.
Sumerlin was named to the Getterman Classic all-tournament team after hitting .385 (5-for-13), with a home run, four RBIs. and two runs scored, She also walked twice and finished with a .467 on-base percentage.
The Getterman Classic is a three-day softball tournament hosted by Baylor University. USM, University of Texas-Arlington and Sam Houston State University also played in the event.
The Lady Eagles (7-4) won two of the five games they played, including 3-1 and 4-3 losses to Baylor. USM split a pair of one-run games with Sam Houston on Saturday, winning 2-1 before dropping a 3-2 decision later that night.
USM opened the tournament with a 5-3 victory over Texas-Arlington.
Sumerlin, a University of Georgia transfer, doubled to drive in a run in USM’s tournament opener.
Two games later, she hit her first home run as a Lady Eagle, breaking a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning that stood up as the eventual winning run against SHSU.
Later that evening, the Mobile, Ala., native smacked a two-run single to tie up a ballgame the Lady Eagles eventually lost by a run.
USM had a midweek doubleheader with Alcorn State University in Hattiesburg postponed by inclement weather. The Lady Eagles are scheduled to resume play this weekend, traveling to Jacksonville, Ala., for a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday.
